Tampa, Fla.- The Indiana women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 match to the South Florida Bulls on Saturday afternoon. The loss snapped a three-match Hoosier winning streak and evened their season mark at 8-8.
The match started out on the right foot for the Hoosiers as they claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Both Hoosier teams improved their winning streaks to five and seven-matches, respectively. Junior Martina Grimm and freshman Martina Grimm won their fifth-straight match and improved their record to 16-7 this season. The duo downed Obando and Taverna, 8-2.
The No. 2 team of junior Linda Tran and sophomore Dominika Walterova won by an identical 8-2 score over Kolendo and Romero. The win was the Hoosier duo's seventh straight as they improved to 7-1 on the year.
The Bulls then won four singles matches to claim the victory. South Florida won at the No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 spots. They clinched the match with a straight sets win at the No. 3 position.
The Hoosiers won two singles at No. 1 and No. 6. Junior Linda Tran picked up a win the Hoosier win at No. 1 as her opponent, Fabiana Taverna, retired in the second set. She had cruised to that point winning 6-4 in the first set and leading 4-1 in the second. Tran has won her last three matches and is 10-11 on the season.
Sophomore Jessica Groth downed Belen Pandre in a three sets tiebreaker, 7-6, 6-7, 1-0 (8) at the No. 6 position. The win was Groth's fourth of the season and third in her last four matches.
Indiana will travel to Penn State and Ohio State next weekend. The Hoosiers will battle the Nittany Lions on Friday, March 28 at 2:30 p.m. The will then take on the Buckeyes in Columbus on Sunday, March 30 at 10:00 a.m.
