Madison, Wis.- The Indiana women's tennis team won its Big Ten opener over Wisconsin, 5-2. The match was closer than the final score would indicate as the Hoosiers were down at one point 2-1, and three matches were forced into a third set. Indiana improves to 9-5 on the season and 1-0 in the Big Ten.
The Hoosiers claimed the first point by winning doubles. Senior Linda Tran and sophomore Sarah Batty captured an 8-4 win over K. McGaffigan and Martin at the No. 1 spot, and senior Karie Schlukebir and junior Dora Vastag secured the doubles point with an 8-4 win over Caiati and McElroy at the No. 3 position.
Wisconsin took the first two singles matches for a 2-1 advantage over the Hoosiers. Schlukebir started the Hoosiers comeback with a 7-5, 6-0 win at the No. 5 singles spot over Teresa Gonzaga.
Vastag, Batty and freshman Laura McGaffigan had their matches forced to a third set. Vastag, playing against No. 58 Katie McGaffigan, scraped out enough points to win the second set, and then outlasted McGaffigan to win at the No. 1 position, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Batty followed suit claiming a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 win over Wisconsin's Lindsay Martin at the No. 3 spot, which sealed the victory for Indiana.
With the team finish decided, L. McGaffigan came away victorious against Kaylan Caiati, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
