University Park, Pa.- The Indiana women's tennis team dropped its second straight match and third straight Big Ten match, 5-2 at Penn State. The Hoosiers are now 8-9 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.
Penn State was able to win the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 position and No. 3 position. Coming in, the Hoosiers had won four straight doubles points.
Freshman Sarah Batty and junior Martina Grimm had their five-match winning streak snapped as they suffered an 8-3 set back to Leigh Ann Meryman and Maaria Husain. The duo is now 16-8 on the season.
Junior Linda Tran and sophomore Dominika Walterova claimed the Hoosiers' lone doubles win at the No. 2 spot. The duo has now won eight straight matches since losing their first together. They are 8-1 on the season all at the No. 2 doubles spot. For Tran the win gives her 85 career doubles wins which pushes her past teammate Karie Schlukebir into ninth on the career doubles victories list. Rachel Epstein and Megan McCarney are next up for Tran with 86 career doubles' wins each.
Tran continued her winning ways in singles for the Hoosiers as well. She pushed her winning streak to four with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Megan Marton. The win evened Tran's overall mark at 11-11.
Penn State would claim the team victory by winning at the No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions all in straight sets.
Grimm was able to claim the only other Hoosier victory with the match's outcome already determined. After dropping the first set 6-3, Grimm battled back to claim the second 6-4. She then won the super tiebreaker 10-8 for the three set win. The win was Grimm's 20th this season as she improved to 20-11. She has now won 20 matches in each of her first three seasons at IU with 22 wins in each of her first two seasons.
The Hoosiers will again be in action against No. 35 Ohio State on Sunday. The match is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in Columbus. The Buckeyes are 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten.
