BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 36 Indiana women's tennis team lost 6-1 to No. 2 Northwestern in Big Ten play Friday afternoon at the IU Varsity Tennis Center. The Hoosiers are now 9-8 overall and 3-1 in league play, while the Wildcats improve to 14-2 and 4-0 in conference play.

Northwestern secured the doubles point by taking all three matches from the Hoosiers. The Cream and Crimson played Northwestern tough in the tandem competition, as two of the three Wildcat teams rank in the top 30, including the top doubles squad in the nation.

Wildcats sophomore Alexis Prousis and senior Kristi Roemer, ranked 29th, bested sophomore Laura McGaffigan and freshman Brianna Williams, 8-4, at No. 2, and junior Jamie Peisel and senior Valerie Vladea upended senior Dora Vastag and sophomore Cecile Perton, 8-6, at No. 3.

At the top position, the IU duo of senior Dominika Walterova and junior Sarah Batty played valiantly against the No. 1 team in the country of freshman Audra Cohen and junior Cristelle Grier. The Wildcat pair broke IU's serve for the second time to take a 7-4 lead in the match, but the Hoosiers broke back and held serve to trim the margin to 7-6. Batty and Walterova would take a 15-0 advantage in the 14th game, but the Wildcats would hold serve and claim the match.

"I was pleased with the doubles play," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "We played really well. We competed hard and will need that same level of play on Sunday against Wisconsin."

Cohen, third in the nation, bested Vastag 6-2, 6-2 at the top singles position, and Prousis, 64th overall, upended McGaffigan at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2.

Vladea bested Walterova, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4 to secure the match for the Wildcats.

Grier, the 13th-ranked player in the country, beat Batty 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2, and senior Andrea Yung downed Perton, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6.

Williams ended the match on a high-note for the Hoosiers with a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7) win over Peisel at No. 5.

The Hoosiers will return to the courts on Sunday, April 3 for a Big Ten battle with No. 35 Wisconsin. The match is slated to begin at 10 a.m., and weather permitting, will be played on the IU Varsity Tennis Courts. If inclement weather should arise, the contest will be held in the IU Varsity Tennis Center. Admission to the league match is free.
