BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 34 Indiana women's tennis team went to 5-0 in the Big Ten with a 6-1 victory over No. 48 Ohio State on Wednesday, April 4, in Bloomington.
The Hoosiers won the doubles point behind victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Alba Berdala and Laura McGaffigan defeated Julie Blackmore and Ally Mueller, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. No. 3 doubles saw Brianna Williams and Erin Clark down Ciara Finucane and Kristin Messmer, 8-5.
In singles, Berdala easily defeated Mueller, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1, while Williams also won in straight sets against Caitlin O'Keefe at No. 4, 6-0, 6-3. A loss by Lindsey Stuckey at No. 6 singles gave Indiana at a 3-1 edge.
The final three singles matches all came down to the wire, going to three sets. Cecile Perton clinched the match victory for Indiana with a win at No. 5, 6-0, 4-6, 6-0, handing Julie Voss her first loss of the spring season.
McGaffigan and Sigrid Fischer's matches each came down to a tiebreaker in the third set. McGaffigan defeated Blackmore at No. 2, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5). Fischer earned a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (5) win over Christina Keesey at No. 3.
"Our goal this year was to beat everyone we could realistically beat," head coach Lin Loring said. "So far we have done that. This was a good match for us. The final score is a little deceiving. The fact that we won two third-set tiebreakers was big. This match could have easily gone a different way. Winning the doubles point was huge. Although we won all three of the matches that went into three sets, it would have been different if we had had to win two of them to win. It is big to be at 5-0 in the Big Ten at this point in the season."
The Hoosiers face a stiff challenge this weekend with matches against No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 11 Northwestern. Indiana remains at home to face the Fighting Irish on Saturday, April 7, at 10 a.m., and takes on the Wildcats on Sunday, April 8, at 10 a.m.
