    Hoosiers fall to Kentucky

Bloomington, IN--The up and down Indiana women's tennis team suffered its second straight defeat today, dropping a 7-2 decision to the Kentucky Wildcats. The Hoosiers fall to 8-8 with the loss and have endured their third two-match losing streak of the season. Kentucky, ranked 24th in the nation, ups its mark to 12-5 on the year.

Freshman Kelly Blanch rebounded nicely from her tough loss yesterday, defeating Kelly Brown 6-7,6-3,6-1 at number two to earn her 15th win of the season. Blanch has played extremely well for the Hoosiers since joining the team in mid-January. She is 15-4 overall and has gone 12-4 in dual matches.

The only other win for the Hoosiers came courtesy of sophomore Jessica Anderson. She won in straight sets, 6-4,6-2, at the number four spot to improve to 21-10 on the season. Anderson notched her 20th win of the year against Ohio State yesterday.

In doubles, the Hoosiers dropped all three matches. The number three team of Christy Sharp and Anderson gave Kathy Herring and Caroline Kirk all they could handle, but the Kentucky tandem held on for a 9-8 victory. Because the match was a non-conference event, the teams counted each doubles position as an individual point, thus giving Kentucky the 7-2 victory.

"We had several key people out with injuries again today," said head coach Lin Loring. "The people that could play did a good job but we can't beat teams like Kentucky unless we have everyone in the lineup healthy."

The Hoosiers are back in action next weekend has they head north for a pair of Big Ten matches. Indiana will invade Madison, Wisc., on Saturday for a 10:00 a.m. match with the Wisconsin Badgers before heading south to Chicago on Sunday. The Hoosiers will battle Northwestern beginning at 10:00 a.m. before heading home to prepare for Illinois and Purdue the following weekend.
