BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana goes on the road for the final time during the regular season to take on Illinois and Purdue. Action begins at 11 a.m. local time each day.
LAST TIME OUT
The No. 33 Hoosiers dropped a pair of matches to two top-15 teams this past weekend, falling 7-0 to No. 2 Notre Dame and 5-2 to No. 11 Northwestern. The highlight of the weekend was Laura McGaffigan and Alba Berdala's upset of 13th-ranked Georgia Rose and Alexis Prousis at No. 1 singles against Northwestern, 8-4.
THE WEEKEND AHEAD
Illinois is 5-12 this season (1-5 Big Ten). Its latest victory came over Wisconsin, 4-3, on April 1. Megan Fudge competes at No. 1 singles for the Illini, while she teams up with Emily Wang for No. 1 doubles.
Purdue, ranked 45th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, is 11-5 on the year and 4-2 in conference play. The teams will be battling for a point in the Crimson and Gold Cup standings. Mallory Voelker leads the Boilermakers at No. 1 singles and teams with Brooke Beler at No. 1 doubles.
HOOSIERS RANKED IN ITA POLL
The Hoosiers are ranked 33rd in the latest ITA FILA Collegiate Rankings of the season, released April 10. Indiana began the year ranked 43rd, and was ranked as high as No. 29 on Feb. 21. Indiana is one of seven Big Ten teams ranked in the poll. Northwestern, ranked No. 9, leads all Big Ten teams in the poll.
HOOSIERS UPSET RANKED OPPONENTS
Senior Laura McGaffigan and sophomore Alba Berdala scored the biggest upset victory of the year when they defeated No. 13 Georgia Rose and Alexis Prousis, handing the Northwestern duo its first loss in Big Ten play this season. Two days before, Rose and Prousis had defeated the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the country. The win helped Indiana take the doubles point over the 11th-ranked Wildcats.
Indiana's biggest win as a team came against No. 21 Kentucky. With the Hoosiers ranked 29th, the team took the doubles point, then won four of the six singles matches to clinch a 5-2 victory. McGaffigan, sophomore Sigrid Fischer, senior Cecile Perton and freshman Lindsey Stuckey all won in singles.
20 WIN SEASONS
Sophomore Sigrid Fischer became the latest Hoosier to reach 20 wins, against Northwestern on April 8. Senior Cecile Perton reached the mark against Ohio State on April 4, while freshman Lindsey Stuckey earned her 20th victory on March 25 against Minnesota.
BERDALA EARNS INDIVIDUAL RANKING
Sophomore Alba Berdala began the year ranked No. 86 nationally in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. It was the first time in her career that she was ranked. Berdala is 17-12 on the year in singles.
