Bloomington, Ind. - Senior Linda Tran was recognized as the Big Ten Conference Co-Athlete of the Week for her performance last weekend against Michigan and Michigan State. She is the first Hoosier woman to receive the honor this season, and its just the second time in school history that a Hoosier player has won the leagues top weekly honor. Tran also picked up Indianas other Big Ten Athlete of the Week honor for the week of March 20, 2003.
Its an honor to get Big Ten Athlete of the Week, Tran said. The only reason for me to receive this honor is because of the team and good players who surround me. We had several great matches this weekend, and it just happened to be me out on the court with the win to clinch the match against Michigan.
Tran won the award by leading the Hoosiers to wins over No. 25 Michigan (13-3) and Michigan State (7-10) by going undefeated at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. Against No. 25 Michigan, Tran highlighted the Hoosiers win by knocking off No. 89 Elizabeth Exon. After winning the first set 6-2, Tran dropped the second set 2-6. She was able to hold on 6-4 in the third set to win the match for Indiana. She then teamed up with Sarah Batty to defeat Michelle DaCosta and Kara Delicata, 8-3 to give Indiana the 4-3 edge.
Against Michigan State, Tran and Batty bested Keri Thompson and Caroline Lay, 8-2 at the top doubles position. The senior completed the weekend with a win over Lay at the No. 2 singles spot, 6-1, 6-3. Tran's singles record currently sits at 13-15 this season and 3-3 in the Big Ten.
The win over Michigan State gave Indiana head coach Lin Loring his 600th win at Indiana, and he was excited for Tran to receive the award for all her hard work.
Its a nice honor for Linda, Loring said. She has worked really hard during her four years at Indiana, and its nice for her to get recognition for that.
Tran will lead the Hoosiers (13-6) into action this weekend when they battle Iowa and Minnesota, both matches will be played on the road. The Iowa match will be Saturday, April 17 at 10:00 a.m. and the Minnesota match will be on Sunday, April 18 at 10:00 a.m.
