Hoosiers Best Gophers
MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 37 Indiana women's tennis team claimed a 6-1 Big Ten win over No. 75 Minnesota on Friday afternoon, April 15, at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Hoosiers have won five of their last seven matches and improve to 12-9 overall and 6-1 in league action, while the Gophers fall to 5-12 on the year and 0-7 on conference play.
"The doubles point was close and well-contested," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "We came out a little bit slower than I would have liked, but we picked it up and found a way to win all three matches. This win makes us 4-0 on the road in the Big Ten, and our match with Iowa on Sunday is going to be huge."
To open doubles action, junior Sarah Batty and senior Dominika Walterova posted an 8-5 win over the tandem of freshman Jane Anderson and sophomore Ida Malmberg. With the victory, Batty and Walterova earned their sixth win of the spring.
In the second doubles slot, sophomore Laura McGaffigan and freshman Brianna Williams recorded an 8-6 triumph over the Minnesota twosome of sophomore Lindsay Risebrough and freshman Danielle Mousseau. The win moved McGaffigan and Williams' triumph total to 10 on the season.
IU's duo of senior Dora Vastag and sophomore Cecile Perton closed out the doubles effort for the Hoosiers with an 8-6 conquest of junior Nishcela Reddy and freshman Marina Bugaenco. With the win, Vastag and Perton pushed their record to 19-7 and moved to 13-5 in spring action.
In singles action, McGaffigan posted her team-leading 15th win of the spring and 23rd victory of the season with a straight-set win over Risebrough, 6-3, 6-2, at the No.3 slot.
The sixth spot finished next, as Perton rolled to a 6-1,6-1 triumph over Bugaenco to improve to 13-7 on the spring and 21-9 overall.
Meanwhile, IU suffered its only defeat of the day in the No. 1 spot as No. 70 Reddy upended No. 101 Vastag, 6-4, 6-1.
Indiana's Batty countered in the No. 2 slot with a 6-3, 6-2 effort over Anderson to move to 17-8 overall and 14-7 in dual matches.
In the No. 5 spot, Williams outlasted Mousseau, 6-4, 7-5, en route to a 19-13 overall marker this season.
Walterova concluded the successful day for the Cream and Crimson with a 2-6, 7-6 (4), 10-6, victory over Malmberg to secure IU's final point.
The Hoosiers will return to the courts on Sunday, April 17, for a Big Ten showdown with No. 49 Iowa. The match is slated to begin at 11 a.m., and will be played in the UI Recreation Building.
"Iowa will be better up and down its lineup," Loring said. "We will need to come out faster in doubles and set the tone in the match early."
