April 16, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, ind. - The #43 Indiana University women's tennis team (13-8, 5-3) concludes the regular season slate this weekend, hosting a pair of schools from the state of Michigan as the Wolverines and Spartans make the trek to Bloomington.
Both matches are scheduled for 11 a.m. starts with Michigan on Saturday and Michigan State on Sunday. Live match updates will be available for both contests.
This marks a crucial weekend in the Big Ten Standings and determining which seed the Hoosiers will earn for the conference tournament. Entering the weekend IU is slotted fifth, but with the potential to move up higher as many conference schools are still vying for their spots. With a head-to-head win over Purdue earlier this season, Indiana has already ensured the five-seed at worst.
#18 Michigan (13-5, 7-1) has two nationally-ranked singles players in #59 Chisako Sugiyama and #111 Rika Tatsuno. Those two together on the doubles court are the 26th-ranked doubles tandem in the country. UM's Tania Mahtani and Whitney Taney are also ranked nationally, sitting at #85 in the doubles rankings. Michigan State (8-13, 1-7) has a doubles duo recognized in the rankings as well with Stephanie Kebler and Elena Ivanova coming in at #74.
Sunday is Senior Day at the IU Tennis Complex as the tennis program will honor a trio of seniors. Alba Berdala, Sigrid Fischer and Stephanie Heller play their last home match in front of the IU faithful. The matches will be played at the Varsity Tennis Courts if weather permits. If inclement weather were to arrive, the matches will be moved indoors to the IU Tennis Center.
