West Lafayette, Ind.- The Indiana women's tennis team fell, 7-0, to No. 45 Purdue on Sunday afternoon. The win gave the Boilers a 7.5-6.5 lead in the Titan Series. Indiana falls to 9-16 on the year and 1-9 in the Big Ten.
The lone victory on the day for Indiana came at the No. 2 doubles position. Freshman Sarah Batty and junior Martina Grimm improved to 21-11 on the year and 6-4 in the Big Ten with an 8-7 win over Missy Wright and Shawna Zuccarini. The Boilers claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.
Purdue continued its roll by sweeping the singles events. The Boilermakers won in straight sets at the No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots. The No. 1 and No. 4 singles positions went three-sets with the Boilers winning.
At the No. 4 position, sophomore Dominika Walterova rebounded from losing the first set 6-0 to Zuccarini and won the second, 6-2. Zuccarini would prove the victor in the end as she won the third and final set, 6-2. Walterova returned to the Hoosier lineup after missing Saturday's match with No. 26 Illinois.
Junior Linda Tran played the most hotly contested match of the day with Gretchen Haynor at the No. 1 spot. Haynor and Tran traded 7-6 set victories in the first and second before heading to a third set super tiebreaker. Haynor claimed the final Boiler win of the afternoon with an 11-9 third set win.
The Hoosiers will return to action Thursday, April 24, for the Big Ten Championships in Champaign, Ill. The Championships will run through the championship match on Sunday, April 27. Indiana finished 10th in the conference and will face the seventh seed, which will be either Wisconsin or Iowa.
