Win Marathon Over Michigan
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - In a marathon match, that featured a venue change and a trio of three-set contests, the No. 40 Indiana women's tennis team earned a 4-3 Big Ten win over No. 41 Michigan on Friday afternoon. With the conquest, the Hoosiers improve to 13-10 overall and 7-2 in the conference, while the Wolverines fall to 10-10 on the year and 5-4 in league play. The victory also assures the Cream and Crimson of being no lower than the No. 3 seed for the Big Ten Championship next weekend in East Lansing, Mich.
"After the tough loss we took at Iowa last weekend, I wasen't sure how the team was going to respond today," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "This match today was really pressure-filled, for what was at stake in the Big Ten race, and I couldn't be more pleased with the way that the ladies played. It was a great team match."
The affair, which totaled 4 hours and 35 minutes, began outdoors on the IU Tennis Courts but as soon as the doubles matches had concluded the rain started to fall and the contest was moved inside to the IU Tennis Center.
Michigan won the initial doubles contest of the day as the team of junior Debra Streifler and sophomore Elizabeth Exon bested senior Dora Vastag and sophomore Cecile Perton, 8-6, at No. 3.
The Hoosiers evened the tandem competition with a victory from sophomore Laura McGaffigan and freshman Brianna Williams at No. 2. The duo downed senior Leanne Rutherford and freshman Allie Shafner by the score of 8-5.
The Cream and Crimson broke serve to take a 2-0 lead in the match, but U-M broke back and held serve to even the tilt at 2-2. The Hoosiers, down 0-40 in game five, held serve to regain the lead at 3-2. IU broke the Wolverines serve to lead 5-3, and then again at 7-3, en route to the win. McGaffigan and Williams are now 10-9 on the spring and 6-3 in Big Ten action.
Indiana secured the doubles point as senior Dominika Walterova and junior Sarah Batty bested Kara Delicata and Michelle DaCosta, ranked 26th in the nation, 8-4, at the top spot. The IU twosome broke U-M's serve to lead 2-1 in the match. The Hoosiers would hold twice, sandwiched around a Wolverines hold, but break again in the seventh game to lead 5-2. Michigan brought the match within two, 6-4, with a break in game 10, but the Hoosiers broke back and held serve in the final game for the win.
It was the first ranked foe that Batty and Walterova had ever defeated, and the duo ran its Big Ten mark to an impressive 8-1 ledger.
Ironically, Batty and current Indiana student assistant and former All-American Linda Tran defeated Delicata and DaCosta, 8-3, on April 10, 2004. The Michigan pair was ranked 26th at the time of last year's meeting.
Perton gave the Hoosiers a 2-0 lead in the contest with a 6-4, 7-5 win over junior Nina Yaftali at No. 6. Perton moved to 22-10 on the year and 14-8 in dual action.
The Wolverines evened the affair as Rutherford bested Walterova, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 4, and DaCosta, ranked 64th, downed Vastag, ranked 122nd, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 1 spot.
Indiana clinched the match as McGaffigan upended Delicate, 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-4, at No. 3, and Batty, ranked 120th, tripped up Exon, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2. McGaffigan is now 24-11 overall and 16-7 this spring, while Batty pushed her overall mark to 18-9 and 15-8 this dual season.
The Hoosiers will return to the courts on Sunday, April 24, for a Big Ten showdown with Michigan State. The match is slated to begin at 10 a.m. With a win and an Iowa loss on Saturday, April 23, at Illinois, or at Purdue on Sunday, April 24, the Cream and Crimson can secure the No. 2 seed for the conference championship on April 28 - May 1.
