Send Walterova Out With Win
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 40 Indiana women's tennis team sent senior Dominika Walterova out with a Big Ten win on Sunday afternoon in the IU Varsity Tennis Center. The Hoosiers bested Michigan State, 6-1, in their regular season conference finale. The Cream and Crimson are now 14-10 overall and 8-2 in league play, while the Spartans fall to 11-11 and 1-9.
"This was a nice way to end the season, especially on senior day for Dominika," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "We played well, and we are looking forward to the Big Ten Championship."
The Hoosiers claimed the initial doubles match of the day as Walterova and junior Sarah Batty bested freshman Christine Bader and senior Keri Thompson, 8-4, at the top position. The IU duo broke serve on three occasions en route to the win. Walterova and Batty close the year with a 9-1 mark in league play. Batty is now 24-7 during Big Ten play for her three-year career.
"For Dominika and Sarah to finish the year at 9-1 in conference doubles is just outstanding," Loring said. "They didn't start the season playing together, so I think that is the highlight for me in doubles."
IU secured the point as senior Dora Vastag and sophomore Cecile Perton got the best of junior Shelly Brady and sophomore Jessica Baron at No. 3. The IU twosome used a trio of service breaks on its way to an 8-4 conquest. Vastag and Perton are now 20-9 overall on the year and 14-7 in dual action.
The team of sophomore Laura McGaffigan and freshman Brianna Williams completed the Cream and Crimson doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over sophomores Pascale Schnitzer and Sarah Andrews at No. 2. The duo used a trio of breaks, including one in the 12th and final game, to earn an 8-4 victory and its 11th win of the spring.
The Hoosiers claimed the match by earning quick victories from Vastag, Batty and McGaffigan at the top three positions. Vastag, 122nd in the country, bested Thompson, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1. Batty, 120th in the nation, downed Bader, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 2, and McGaffigan sealed the match, 6-3, 6-1, over Schnitzer at No. 3. McGaffigan notched her 50th career victory with the straight-set win.
Walterova posted a win in her final singles contest, 6-0, 6-1, over Baron at the No. 4 slot.
"It feels really good to get a win in both doubles and singles in my last home match," Walterova said. "I was a little nervous before the singles, but I tried to stay focused and positive. I tried to play my best, and it all worked out."
Perton corralled a win, 6-1, 6-1, over Brady at No. 6.
The Hoosiers will return to the courts next weekend for the Big Ten Championship, April 28 - May 1, in East Lansing, Mich.
