Indiana Plays Penn State in Opening Round of Big Ten Tournament
April 26, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team will open postseason play on Thursday, April 28, in the first round of the Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament. The No. 7-seeded Hoosiers will battle the No. 10 seed, Penn State, at 1 p.m. ET to begin their weekend. This year's event will take place at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
IU is very familiar with the Nittany Lions, as the two teams just met last Sunday with the Hoosiers earning a 6-1 win on Senior Day. In that match, Indiana swept the doubles portion of the match, and then picked up five wins in singles play. However, the final team score does not show how close many of the matches were, as four of the six singles matches went to a third set and one doubles match was decided with a tiebreaker.
Leslie Hureau and Evgeniya Vertesheva will lead the way for Indiana on the singles side as Hureau is ranked No. 57 and Vertesheva sits at No. 114 in Tuesday's ITA Women's National Singles Rankings. Hureau is also ranked in doubles with teammate Myriam Sopel, as they are No. 56 in the country.
Indiana women's tennis has won 16 Big Ten Championships since the program's inception. Head Coach Lin Loring has been a part of every one of those titles and as he vies for another this weekend.
