Hoosiers Tripped Up In Big Ten Quarterfinals
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 2-seeded Indiana women's tennis team lost 4-2 to No. 7 Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Championship at the MSU Tennis Center Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Hoosiers fall to 14-11 on the season.
"We competed so hard during the regular season, I feel like we ran out of gas today," Indiana head coach Lin Loring. "We played hard today, but both teams are fairly even. It's extremely hard to beat a team twice in one season, especially one that is so evenly matched to us [Indiana] as Michigan is."
The Cream and Crimson secured the doubles point, but the Wolverines won four of the next five singles matches to grab the contest.
The Hoosiers evened the tandem competition with a victory from sophomore Laura McGaffigan and freshman Brianna Williams at No. 2. The duo downed senior Leanne Rutherford and freshman Allie Shafner by the score of 8-5. The Indiana twosome moved to 12-9 on the year.
Indiana secured the doubles point as senior Dominika Walterova and junior Sarah Batty rolled over Kara Delicata and Michelle DaCosta, ranked 21st in the nation, 9-8 (5), at the top spot. The IU duo has their number, as they beat the Michigan pair last weekend, April 22, when they were ranked 26th in the country. Walterova and Batty have won seven of their last eight matches and are now 10-5 for the spring.
McGaffigan pushed the Hoosiers ahead 2-0 with a 7-6 (2), 6-1 win over Delicata at No. 3. The Davenport, Iowa, native is now 26-11 on the year.
The Wolverines claimed the next four matches and the affair. Stifler bested Williams, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5, Rutherford downed Walterova at No. 4, 6-2, 6-3, Exon edged Batty, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2, and junior Nina Yaftali tripped up Perton, 7-6 (2), 6-3, at No. 6.
The Hoosiers will now await the NCAA Selection Show on Thursday, May 4, at 4:30 p.m. (EST) to determine their postseason participation.
