April 29, 2011
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - No. 7 seed Indiana (14-11, 4-8) fell to No. 2 seed Northwestern (18-7, 9-1) on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament in Ann Arbor. The Wildcats earned the first four team points of the match to move on to the semifinals on Saturday.
NU started things taking the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches with both of those scores ending in an 8-4 margin.
In singles, Northwestern quickly won the No. 4 and No. 5 matches. The match was clinched with No. 13 Maria Mosolova topping IU's No. 57 Leslie Hureau, 6-2, 7-5, as Hureau tried to go the distance in the second set. In other singles matches that were abandoned, Myriam Sopel won her first set at No. 6 and was leading the second set, 6-2, 4-2. Katya Zapadalova was leading in her second set after falling in the first playing No. 3. Evgeniya Vertesheva also hung tough at No. 2, forcing a tiebreaker in the first set to decide things and trailed just by a game in the second, 7-6 (5), 2-1.
"This was a good match to end our season," Head Coach Lin Loring said. "We took a top 20 team the distance on 4 of the 6 singles matches. They knew they were in a battle. I was very pleased with the team effort today. I feel we have a great core of players returning next season, led by our two first team All-Big Ten players, Evgeniya and Leslie. Combined with the No. 6 recruiting class in the country, I am very optimistic about next year and the seasons to follow."
