Women Defeat Michigan State 4-0
East Lansing, MI-The women's tennis team defeated Michigan State 4-0 today in the first round of the Big Ten Championships. With the win the Hoosiers will face 2nd-seeded Wisconsin tomorrow.
The Hoosiers took the doubles point by winning two matches. Zahra Ahamed and Jennifer Hsia, playing at the No. 2, defeated Brooke West and Isabelle Oelze 8-6. At No. 3, Jessica Anderson and Amanda Field defeated Natsha Skogerboe and Brooke Townsend 8-2. The top-seeded match was abandoned after the Hoosiers had won the doubles point.
The Hoosiers finished the Spartans off by taking three singles matches. At No. 3, Ahamed defeated Skogerboe 6-2,6-2. Field was victorious over Kelli Hayes 6-4,6-2 at No. 4. At No. 6, Hsia defeated Jaime Tannenbaum 6-1,6-2. The last three matches were not finished after the Hoosiers had the 4-0 victory.
Head Coach Lin Loring, "We knew the doubles point would set the momentum and it was really close. Michigan State competed much than three weeks ago when we played them. Considering the wind, I thought that we played well today."
The Hoosiers improved their record to 10-14 overall and 5-6 in the Big Ten, while Michigan State ended their season with a 11-12 overall record and 1-10 in the Big Ten.
The Hoosiers will continue play tomorrow in the second round of the Big Ten Championships against Wisconsin at 2 p.m. In East Lansing, Michigan.
