Evanston, Ill.- In a match that was forced indoors because of inclement weather, the second seed and 21st-ranked Indiana women's tennis team's season came to an end with a 4-3 loss to seventh-seed and 40th-ranked Iowa in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament. Indiana is now 53-10 all-time in Big Ten Tournament action. After sweeping Iowa in the regular season, the Hawkeyes were able to end the Hoosiers Big Ten Tournament hopes.
The Hoosiers dropped the doubles point for just the third time this season in Big Ten action. Indiana was able to capture the win at the No. 3 position as seniors Martina Grimm and Karie Schlukebir downed Chelsea Glynn and Hilary Tyler, 8-4. The win improved the teams' record to 6-1.
Indiana claimed the first singles match to come off the court to even the score at 1-1. At No. 1 singles, 59th-ranked Dora Vastag downed Meg Racette, 6-4, 6-3, to give the Hoosiers a start of momentum.
Iowa picked up the win at the No. 2 singles position to move ahead, 2-1, on Indiana.
With the next two singles matches to finish, the Hoosiers continued to roll. Sophomore Sarah Batty, playing at the No. 3 position, captured the straight-set victory over Glynn, 6-4, 6-1. This is the second time this season she has downed Glynn. The win upped her overall record to 21-13 on the year. Freshman Laura McGaffigan then downed Anastasia Zhukova, 7-5, 6-2, to move Indiana to a 3-2 advantage over Iowa.
Iowa evened the score at 3-3 claiming the victory at the No. 6 spot.
The No. 5 singles match between senior Karie Schlukebir and Deni Alexandrova would decide the match for the Hoosiers. After dropping the first set 4-6, Schlukebir won the second 6-4. After going ahead 4-3 in the third, Schlukebir would drop the next three games, and fall to Alexandrova, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
