Batty Named All-Big Ten
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana junior women's tennis player Sarah Batty was named to the All-Big Ten first team, as announced by the league office on Thursday. The Chesterfield, England product earns her first conference accolade, and the 68th such honor for the Hoosier program under the direction of IU head coach Lin Loring.
Batty, a 2004 All-American doubles player, earned her first career national singles ranking of 122nd, on April 19, and moved to 100th in the April 26 poll.
She had an overall singles mark of 16-10, including a spring ledger of 16-8 at the No. 2 position. The junior posted singles wins over then-No. 77 Ashlee Davis, 6-4, 6-1, of Wake Forest, then-No. 90 Brook Buck, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4), of Notre Dame and then-No. 93 Katie McGaffigan, 6-2, 7-5, of Wisconsin during the 2005 slate.
Batty, 7-3 in Big Ten play, corralled the Big Ten Player of the Week certificate on April 27, and notched six- and four- match winning streaks during the dual campaign.
Senior Dominika Walterova and Batty were a formable pair at the No. 1 doubles position for the Cream and Crimson this spring. The tandem, currently 39th in the nation, displayed a record of 10-5 during the year and a 9-1 slate in league action. The duo owns a pair of victories over Michigan's Michelle DaCosta and Kara Delicate, who currently rank 20th in the country.
Of the tandem's five losses, four of them came to teams that currently rank in the top 30 of the ITA poll, with a trio of them resting in the top six. Walterova and Batty fell to No. 5 Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline, 8-1, on April 30, No. 29 Story Tweedie-Yates and Ana Cetnik, 8-4, on March 10, No. 2 Audra Cohen and Cristelle Grier, 8-6, on April 1 and No. 6 Catrina Thompson and Christian Thompson, 8-6, on April 10.
