Hoosier Duo Comes up Just Short
May 22, 2002
Stanford, Cal. - The Indiana womens tennis team was represented by the duo of junior Karie Schlukebir and sophomore Linda Tran at the 2002 NCAA Doubles Championship. After waiting one day due to rain, the Hoosier pair jumped out to an early lead, but fell to the fourth-seeded tandem of Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten from Kentucky in the second round of the tournament.
In the crucial third set, Mayorga and Witten broke the Hoosier duo to take a 3-1 advantage. The Wildcat duo held on from there for a 6-4 third set victory. The loss put an end to Schlukebir and Trans 15-match winning streak. They finished the season with a 35-10 record.
Schlukebir and Tran took the first set from the Kentucky duo, 6-3. The IU pair appeared poised to take the match, as they jumped out to an early 4-2 lead, but the Wildcats fought back and broke to even it at four. The Cats duo broke Schlukebir and Tran once again and took the second set, 7-5.
In their first round match against 20th-ranked Raquel Kops-Jones and Jody Scheldt of California, Schlukebir and Tran cruised to a one set advantage. They downed the Cal tandem in the first set 6-1. The second set was a bit more heated though as the pairs had to go to a tie-breaker before the Indiana duo sent Cal packing with a 7-6 (4) win. With the victory, Schlukebir and Tran became only the fourth and fifth female Hoosiers to pick up 35 doubles victories in a season.
