Athens, Ga. - The season came to an end for the 25th-ranked Indiana womens doubles tandem of senior Linda Tran and sophomore Sarah Batty as they fell to the 23rd-ranked UCLA doubles team of Daniela Bercek and Lauren Fisher in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the 2004 NCAA Doubles Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Center.
According to IU head coach Lin Loring, it was a great match that came down to just a couple of big points.
The match came down to three or four big points and a lot of deuce games, Loring said. Today they played as good as I have ever seen them play. They were able to dominate the other team in the first set with their serves, returns and lobs, but they werent quite as good in the second and third set. That was mostly likely the difference in the match. Bercek and Fisher are a power team, and we had a lot of lobs in the first set that they werent sure what to do with.
Batty and Tran jumped out early, taking the first set easily, 6-1. The score was even at 1-1 before IU took control to win the first set. The UCLA tandem battled back in the second set to forced the match into a third set. Bercek and Fisher had gone up, 3-1, before the Hoosiers were able to draw close at 4-3. It would not be enough for IU, as UCLA would eventually take the set, 6-4. Tran and Batty again were forced to battle from behind in the third set. With the score 2-2, UCLA was able to take control of the set and go ahead, 3-2, and the pair never appeared to look back. Batty and Tran were able to draw close at 4-3, but would lose the final two games to drop the set, 6-4.
Batty and Tran end the season with an overall record of 14-3.
