ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit Draws Released
July 24, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University will host a leg of the 2009 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Collegiate Summer Circuit this weekend with play beginning on Saturday and running through Monday. Five Hoosiers are expected to compete in the event, four members of the men's team and one women's team player.
Over 22,000 men and women have competed in circuit events since it began in 1993. The circuit is the brainchild of Indiana head women's tennis coach Lin Loring and provides college (and junior) players the opportunity to compete in organized events virtually year round. It is made up of seven regional circuits (East, Southeast, Midwest, Central, Mountain, Southwest and West) and six of the seven regions consist of four consecutive open tournaments played during the month of July, leading up to the August 8-12 ITA National Summer Championships in Bloomington, Indiana. New in 2008 were two extra circuit events in the state of Colorado.
Representing Indiana this year for the men will be Maxime Armengaud, Santiago Gruter, Jeremy Langer and Stephen Vogl. Armengaud, Gruter and Vogl all received one of the top four seeds while Langer was seeded 5-8.
For the women, it will be Katya Zapadalova taking the court representing the women's team as a 5-8 seed.
Complete results and updates on the how the Hoosiers are faring in the regional will be available right here at IUHoosiers.com throughout the weekend.
Armengaud and Vogl have each won other ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit regional tournaments earlier this summer with Armengaud taking the singles title at a tournament hosted by Western Michigan and Vogl doing the same at the University of Michigan-hosted tournament. In addition, those two Hoosiers paired up at Michigan to claim the doubles championship.
Another IU doubles tandem of Gruter and Langer combined to win the doubles title at the Western Michigan ITA regional tournament.
