Hoosiers Have an Impressive First Day at ITAs

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Four Hoosiers, Sarah Batty, Pam Gesellchen, Nikki Hein, and Stephanie Heller, ended day one competition at week four of the ITA's Midwest Summer Circuit at the Varsity Tennis Center, with a handful of convincing wins.
Batty defeated Akron's Lindsey Berry 6-0, 6-2 before advancing on to face Stephanie Millis from Evansville. Victorious in straight sets again, Batty defeated Millis 6-3, 6-0. Batty takes on Boston's Cori Lefkowith Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m.
Pam Gesellchen was defeated by Cleveland State's Abby Showalter, 6-4, 6-0, but beat Katie Dulmage of Chicago 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round of the women's consolation bracket. Gesellchen is slated to face Michelle Hanes from Butler Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
Sophomore Nikki Hein was also defeated in a well-fought game by Valparaiso's Rachel Janssen in the opening round. Like Gesellchen, Hein battled back to beat Southern Indiana's Reilly Ackerman 6-2, 6-4 in the consolation bracket. Hein squares off at 8:30 a.m. against Western Michigan's Ashley Moccia.
Incoming freshman Stephanie Heller had an impressive first showing on her future home courts. Heller advanced into the second round of the women's bracket by defeating Cleveland State's Lindsey Sellers 6-0, 6-1. Heller continued her undefeated day by beating Kelly Adams of Middle Tennessee in a hard-fought 6-1, 6-7, 1-0(3) win. Heller takes on Murray State's Anna Lask at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
