Hoosiers Shine Again in Day Two of ITAs

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - At the conclusion of day two of the ITA Midwest Summer Circuit, the four Hoosier competitors ended the day in impressive style. Senior captain Sarah Batty and Pam Gesellchen and her doubles partner, Murray State's Anne Pennington, both advanced to the semifinals of their respective brackets. Batty will take the court at 9:00 a.m. and Gesellchen and Pennington at 11:00 at the Varsity Tennis Center at IU.
"I am pleased with the level of competition this tournament has produced," tournament director Ramiro Azcui said. "We had some great wins today and we are looking forward to an excellent final day of play."
Batty defeated Boston's Cory Lefkowith 6-2, 6-3 to advance to face Rachel Janssen of Valparaiso. Batty was victorious again by a score of 6-4, 6-7, 1-0(9). Batty squares off in the semis against Carrie Jeanmaire of Western Michigan.
In doubles action, Batty and partner, Nikki Hein, defeated Amy Palmgren of Michigan Tech and Rachel Janssen 9-7 before falling to Yumi Matsuto from Lansing College and Shivani Dave of Illinois, 8-6.
Hein came up just short in the singles consolation bracket by loosing to Murray State's Ashley Moccia, 6-3, 6-2.
Gesellchen's singles tournament ended with a hard fought loss to Butler's Michelle Hawes 6-0, 6-2, but her stellar doubles day was just beginning. Gesellchen and Pennington defeated Kelly Adams, Middle Tennessee and Chelsea Bond, Southern Mississippi, 8-4 and then beat a talented Western Michigan duo of Malena Remynse and Carrie Jeanmaire, 9-7, putting them in the semifinals of doubles action. Gesellchen and Pennington take the court at 11:00 a.m. to face Lindsey Winingham from Dartmouth and her partner.
Freshman Stephanie Heller's first run on her future home courts ended today as she was defeated in a hard fought match against Anna Lask from Murray State, 6-4, 6-0.
