    Loring Announces Recruiting Class

    BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University Women's Tennis Coach Lin Loring has announced his recruiting class for the 2007-08 school year. Maria Guerreiro (Almada, Portugal), Charlotte Martin (West Midlands, England), Myriam Sopel (Longnes, France) and Ekaterina (Kate) Zapadalova (Yaroslavl, Russia) will all join the Hoosier family this fall.

    "We sat on two scholarships last year and played the season with six scholarship athletes," said Loring. "I was holding my breath all season hoping we didn't get an injury. Fortunately our two walk-ons both made contributions last year."

    "It will be nice to have a full squad this year. In 34 years of coaching I have never had four scholarships open the same year. We'll have to put name tags on the players the first day of practice."


    Maria Guerreiro is from Lisbon, Portugal. She was twice national singles champion in the 16's and national doubles champion in the 16's and 18's. She also has extensive international ITF and WTA experience. She has two wins and six runner-ups in ITF doubles tournaments. She was ranked top 20 in the European Tennis Association 16's. She studied and trained in London for nine months and is fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, Russian and English.

    Charlotte Martin is from West Midlands, England. She has a current new LTA rating of 3.1, which was a 1.5 under the old system. She is ranked #30 nationally in the 18's and #35 in the Open British singles rankings. She is also ranked #1 in her state, Shropshire, and has represented them at #1 in both junior and senior team events. She also had extensive ITF and WTA experience, and recently reached the quarterfinals of a $10,000 ITF event in Portugal. Has a WTA ranking of 1140. Her father played soccer and her sister also plays tennis

    Myriam Sopel is from Longnes, France. She is ranked among the top 30 juniors in France. She is ranked "0" in the French ranking system, which is the same ranking that recent graduate and four year starter Cecile Perton had when she entered Indiana.

    Ekaterina (Kate) Zapadalova is from Yaroslavl, Russia. She reached the semifinals of the Russian Championships in the 16's. Was ranked #10 nationally in the 16's. Finished second nationally in mixed doubles. She has extensive international ITF and WTA experieince and is currently ranked 1206 in the WTA. Her father, a doctor, played basketball for the national junior team in Russia. And her mother was a gymnast for the Russsian national team.
