    Five Hoosiers Still in Contention at ITA National Summer Championships

    Men's Singles Draw Get Acrobat Reader | Women's Singles Draw Get Acrobat Reader

    BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Five Indiana University tennis players advanced through the first two rounds of action at the ITA National Summer championships on Saturday. Two Hoosiers advanced in the men's bracket and three advanced in the women's bracket as well. Charlotte Martin, Lindsey Stuckey and Katya Zapadalova will play in the third round at 8 a.m. on Sunday, while Alex Van Gils and Santiago Gruter will compete at 9:30 a.m. All times are ET.

    With a bye through the first round, Stuckey and Zapadalova entered second round matchups fresh. Stuckey took full advantage, shutting down Sarah Knoll of Hackley 6-0, 6-0. Zapadalova defeated Emily Harman of Syracuse 6-4, 6-2. Martin won a first round match against Jennifer Taylor of Tennessee Chattanooga 6-1, 6-4, and then she took down Julie Flanzer of Brown in the second round (6-4, 6-1).

    Van Gils, an incoming freshman for the Hoosiers, had an impressive showing as he dismissed Connor Roth of Illinois 6-2, 6-0 in the first round and then took care of Warren Elgort of Johns Hopkins 6-1, 6-3. Gruter took care of Christian Mineur of the U.S. Naval Academy 6-1, 6-2 and then defeated Deon Shafer of IUPUI 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (4).

    The ITA National Summer Championships continue on the IU campus on Sunday with women's competition beginning at 8 a.m. Doubles play will begin on Sunday as well. For complete coverage of Indiana tennis, stay tuned IUHoosiers.com.
