Bloomington, Ind. - Eight Hoosiers began competition in the ITA National Collegiate Summer Circuit Championships Saturday morning. In the womens draw, Indiana is represented by seniors Martina Grimm, Karie Schlukebir, and Linda Tran, sophomore Sarah Batty and freshmen Laura McGaffigan and Dora Vastag. Representing Indiana in the mens draw is junior Ryan Recht and sophomore John Stone.
Grimm won her opening round match against Leila Cehajic of Illinois 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (7). She was then defeated 6-3, 6-2 by Michelle DaCosta of Michigan.
Schlukebir was defeated in the opening round 6-3, 6-2 by Georgia Rose of North Shore CDS.
Tran a nine through 16 seed in the tournament downed Mackenzie Mekus of Louisville in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 before being defeated 6-4, 6-4 by Shelah Chao of Pennsylvania.
Batty opened with a 6-0, 6-3 win against Maelyn Bernoski of Western Michigan. She went on to defeat Veronica Perez of Louisiana-Monroe 6-0, 6-2. She moves on to the round of 16 where she will face Alexis Plukas.
McGaffigan defeated Daisy Ames of Brown 6-4, 6-2 and then fell to Kristina Stastny of Notre Dame 6-2, 6-2.
Vastag a nine through 16 seed had a walk-over in the first round and then defeated Malnea Remynse of Western Michigan 7-5, 6-0. She takes on Kendall Cline of North Carolina in the round of 16.
On the mens side, Recht faced David Attalah (Kalamazoo College) in the first round and defeated him 6-2, 6-2. In Rechts second match up, he went up against John Nallon (Texas A & M) and moved on again by defeating him 6-3, 6-2. Recht will next face Bryan Fisher (LSU) in the round of 16.
In the opening round Stone put up a tough effort, but was knocked out by Christopher Lee (HS) 6-3, 6-4. He then moved on to the constellation round where he competed against Stephen Chao (Lawrenceville) and defeated him 4-6, 6-1, 1-0(4).
The ITA National Summer Champions will continue tomorrow at the Indiana Tennis Courts located just off Fee Lane. The round of 16 in the Men's and Women's singles will be played on Sunday morning and Mens and Womens doubles action will begin in the afternoon.
