Bloomington, Ind. -The Hoosier duo of senior Karie Schlukeibr and junior Linda Tran are back to their winning ways. The duo has advanced to the semifinals of the ITA National Summer Championships. They are set to face Cassie Haas of Iowa and Nina Kamp of William and Mary on Monday. If the duo wins on Monday and the finals on Tuesday, they would automatically qualify for the main draw of the All-American. A second place finish would result in a berth in the qualifications for the All-American.
Schlukebir and Tran are the No. 1 seed in the tournament and downed Eva Choe and Michelle Webb of Illinois in their first match, 8-2. The IU pair then downed Lindsey Adams and Taryn Bowen of Ohio State, 8-5.
Schlukebir and Tran will face off against one another in the mixed doubles. The two have paired with the men's No. 1 seed from Florida. Schlukebir is teamed with Chris McDonald, while Tran's partner is Trey Johnson. Schlukebir and McDonald downed Alexis Martire of Harvard and Hans Plukas of Princeton in their first match, 9-8. They then advanced to the finals with an 8-4 victory over Jessica Ferguson of LSU and Patrick Briaud of UC-Berkley.
Tran and Johnson cruised to the finals with an 8-0 win over Christina Cuyler of Midlands High School and Francisco Velasquez of St. Joes, and a 8-2 win over Kelly Baritot of Texas and Eric Kochanski of West Virginia. The Hoosier/Gator pairs will battle for the title tomorrow.
Tran also played in the women's singles draw of the National Championships, where she was seeded nine through 12. Yesterday, she downed Cameron Benjamin of Bowling Green in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Today, however, was a different story as Tran ran into the 5-8 seed, Gretchen Haynor of Purdue. After winning the first set, 6-4, Tran dropped the next set 4-6 and then the tiebreaker 10-7.
The ITA National Summer Champions will continue tomorrow at the Indiana Tennis Courts located just off of Fee Lane. Finals in the Men's and Women's singles and Men's and Women's doubles will be played on Tuesday.
