Field Set for ITA Summer National Championships
Aug. 11, 2006
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The men's and women's singles fields are set for the 2006 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Summer National Championships. Action begins Saturday, Aug. 12 at 8 a.m. at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts. The event runs through Wednesday, Aug. 16, with free admission.
The Indiana women boast five players in this year's tournament. Senior Laura McGaffigan earned the No. 5 seed and will face Boston University's Danielle Abraham at 12:30 p.m.
Junior Brianna Williams, a nine seed, will face Barbara Zideck from William and Mary at 11 a.m.
Sophomores Sigrid Fischer and Stephanie Heller will open up play at the Summer National Championships as well. Fischer will take on Ohio State's Ally Muller at 12:15 p.m., while Heller will face Yasmin Schnack at 11 a.m.
Incoming freshman Erin Clark will compete in her first match as a Hoosier when she goes up against Texas State's Christina Amo at 12:15 p.m.
Last season, former Hoosier Sarah Batty and McGaffigan claimed the Summer Championship doubles title with an 8-3 win over North Carolina's Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith, becoming the first Hoosier doubles team to earn a bid to the ITA All-American Tournament since Deborah Edelman and Rachel Epstein accomplished the feat in 1992.
Clark, Fischer, Heller, McGaffigan and Williams are not the only Hoosiers with involvement in the national tournament. Indiana head coach Lin Loring is the ITA's Summer Tournament's founder and national tournament director. Loring, who is entering his 30th season for the Hoosiers, began the summer circuit play in 1993. The National Summer Championships were added to the program in 1994. Over 20,000 student-athletes have participated in the summer action since the tournament's inception.
