    Meet Martina Grimm

    Bloomington, IN - A native of Ellwangen, Germany, Martina Grimms came to the United States with a large list of tennis accomplishments. Grimms was a two-time junior county champion of Baden-Wuerttembeg, won the Sparkassen Cup of Heidenheim twice, finished first in the junior LBS tournament, and won the Sport Schwab Aalen Open.

    Grimms entered her freshman year at IU in the fall of 2000, posting a 10-5 fall record. During the spring season she finished with an overall singles record of 22-17. Grimms broke even, tallying a 12-12 dual record with a 4-5 mark in the Big Ten. Grimms tallied a 6-5 doubles record at the No. 1 position with senior Kelly Blanch, and went 15-13 overall in doubles action.

    Last season Grimms compiled an overall singles record of 22-15, playing mostly at the No. 5 position, and posting a singles record of 3-7 in the Big Ten. In doubles play Grimms went 20-13, finishing the season playing with Amanda Field as her partner. Grimms and Field clinched doubles point at the NCAA Regional against Auburn, defeating Liz Sauerborn and Sarah Suiter.

    Academically Grimms has been successful as well. Freshman year she earned Alpha Beta honors, and in her sophomore year she received both Academic All-Big Ten and Alpha Beta honors.

    Q: Do you have any brother's or sisters?

    MG: "I have one sister and a half-sister. My sisters name is Linda and my half-sisters name is Dita."

    Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?

    MG: "I like to do any kind of sports, like basketball, volleyball, go for a run, but most of all I like to hang out with my family and friends. Just watching a movie with friends and being a bum on the couch is the very best!"

    Q: Most memorable athletic moment?

    MG: "Any moment when an athlete achieves something that's incredible is always very emotional and memorable for me."

    Q: If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would it be?

    MG: "I'd love to go to Australia or New Zealand."

    Q: What do you aspire to be or do after graduation?

    MG: "After graduation I'll probably go back to Europe because of my family and friends, even though my friend Colleen wants me to go to Colorado with her."

    Q: When did you start playing tennis?

    MG: "I started playing tennis when I was 11.5 years old."

    Q: If you had to play another sport, what would it be and why?

    MG: "I think that it would be basketball or volleyball because both are very team oriented and moving."

    Q: What three words best describe you:

    MG: "Honest, friendly, and crazy."
