Kalamazoo, Mich. The Indiana womens tennis team opened its fall tournament schedule on Friday, Sept. 19 at the Bronco Invitational hosted by Western Michigan. The Hoosiers began the tournament by winning 12 matches.
The Indiana singles lineup won five of its matches, with four of those matches being in straight sets. Seniors Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran, sophomore Sarah Batty and freshmen Laura McGaffigan and Kara Zeder all claimed singles wins to advance to the quarterfinals in their respected flights.
The Hoosiers will send three doubles teams to the semifinals. Senior doubles tandem Schlukebir and Tran, the No. 1 seed and preseason ITA 28th-ranked, downed Western Michigans Rattiya Hiranrat and Maelynn Bernosky, 8-2, and Ball States Melissa Roach and Katie Owens, 8-2.
Head coach Lin Loring was especially pleased with the doubles play of McGaffigan and junior Dora Vastag. They defeated Michigan States Caroline Lay and Sarah Andrews, 8-2, and Illinois Tiffany Eklov and Emily Wang, 8-5.
The doubles team of senior Martina Grimm and Batty also won two matches to advance to the semifinals. They defeated Marquettes Eva Trujillo-Herrera and Francina Bonnelly, 8-1, and the No. 2 seed and ITA preseason 31st-ranked, Illinois Jennifer McGaffigan and Cynthya Goulet, 8-4.
Overall the team played great today, said Loring. I am especially pleased with ourdoubles performance. All the teams in the field have their No. 1 and 2 doubles team in the first draw, and for us to have three of the four teams in the semifinals, speaks highly of our doubles teams.
The Hoosiers return to action tomorrow in day two of action at the Bronco Invitational.
