Kalamazoo, Mich. The Indiana womens tennis team concluded play at the Bronco Invitational hosted by Western Michigan on Sunday, Sept. 21. Overall, the Hoosiers did extremely well in their first tournament of the fall.
In the singles flight C final, freshman Kara Zeder defeated Illinois Leila Cehajic 7-6, 6-0.
In the winners bracket consolation singles final, sophomore Sarah Batty defeated the ITA preseason 62nd-ranked, Frederika Girsang of Western Michigan 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8).
Indiana also competed in bonus singles and doubles action. The Hoosiers won all four doubles matches and their one singles match.
Head coach Lin Loring is excited about Indianas start to the season, and the performance of newcomers Kara Zeder and Laura McGaffigan.
We had a good day today going 8-0, and Im pleased with our doubles teams, Loring said. Our freshmen, Kara and Laura both had a very good tournament. Sarah had a nice win today, and Karie Schlukebir played well in singles throughout the tournament. This was a good way to start the year, and the team feels it is off to a good start.
The Hoosiers return to action October 3-5 when Indiana hosts the Hoosier Classic at the IU Varsity Courts.
