Indiana Starts Season Off Right With Wins at Deacon Classic
Sept. 22, 2006
Winston-Salem, N.C. - Eight Indiana women's tennis players won singles matches on the first day of the Deacon Classic at Wake Forest University, while two doubles pairs reached the finals of their respective flights.
"We played well today," head coach Lin Loring said. "We basically won all the matches we were supposed to win. It's going to get a lot tougher the next two days because we will probably face players from Ohio State and Wake Forest. We expect to be playing a lot against them. We're going to have to raise our level of play to be successful the next few days."
Flight "B" saw junior Brianna Williams and senior Cecile Perton move into the second round. Williams earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tara Byrne of East Tennessee State, while Perton took down Kathy Robey of Charlotte in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0.
Freshman Lindsey Stuckey and sophomore Alba Berdala advanced in flight "C." Stuckey won 6-2, 6-0 against Stephanie Smith of Kansas, while Berdala topped East Tennessee State's Vita Moskaliova, 6-0, 6-0.
