HOOSIERS BEGIN SEASON WITH FALL INVITATIONAL

On Tap: Indiana begins its 1998-99 campaign this weekend at it's annual Indiana Fall Invitational. Starting on Friday morning players from six six teams will compete in a three-day tournament that ends Sunday night. This year, Indiana will play host to Ball State, Kansas, Miami (OH), Marquette and Southern Illinois.

Recapping Last Year: After finishing the Big Ten season with a 6-4 record , and a sixth seed in the Big Ten Tournament, the Hoosiers regained top form as they went on to win the Big Ten Tournament. The Big Ten Championship was their first in the last three years and their 15th since 1980. The season came to an end, however, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Midwest Regionals, as they lost to the Regional top-seed UCLA. The Hoosiers ended their year with a 17-11 record and a #35 national ranking.

Head Coach Lin Loring: Loring is entering his 22nd season as the Head Coach of the Hoosiers Women's Tennis team. In his 21 seasons, he has compiled a remarkable overall record of 252-130, while accumulating a 252-23 record against Big Ten opponents. The 4 time Big Ten Coach-of-the-Year and the 2 time National Coach-of -the-Year, has compiled a 563-147 overall record in his 25 year coaching career. Prior to Indiana, Coach Loring had a 4 year stint as head coach at UC-Santa Barbara.

Youth Movement: This year the Hoosiers will be looking for contribution from a all ten players. With Kelly Fitzgerald as the team's lone senior, the team will look at their younger players to carry this years team. Juniors Jessica Anderson and Zahra Ahamed, along with sophomore Kelly Blanch should be the cornerstones of the team this year. Anderson led the Hoosiers for the second straight last year, with 29 victories. Ahamed ended the year with a 23-13 record in singles and had a 32-7 doubles record. Blanch played half the season and saw time at #2 singles, and also earned a trip to the NCAA Doubles Tournament.
