Bloomington, IN--The Hoosiers women's tennis team rebounded from a slow start in the first round of the annual Indiana Fall Invitational to end the day with a strong second round of singles play. Playing in the six team tournament with Ball State, Kansas, Miami (OH), Marquette and Southern Illinois, the Hoosiers advanced four players to the finals of their respected flights.
The annual Indiana Fall Invitational consists of six singles flights and two doubles flights. In flight one, junior Zahra Ahamed lost her first match to Natalie Soetrisno of Miami (OH) 6-4,6-3, then turned the tables in her second match to defeat Gena Tranquada of Ball State 7-6(1),6-4. In flight 2, the second-seed Jessica Anderson, advanced to tomorrow's first-place game, by beating Southern Illinois' Pamela Floro, then winning a three set match over Megan Wagenaar of Kansas 1-6,6-1,6-3. Sophomore Ana Ceretto, lost her first match to Julia Sapozhnikova 6-4,6-2, but then knocked off Miami (OH)'s Elin Bengtsson 7-5,6-2. Freshmen Amanda Field and Karie Schlubekir both advanced to the second round of flight 3 singles. Schlubekir topped Darcy Poulos of Ball State 6-4,6-4, before losing to Sara Fernandez of Marquette 6-4,6-3. Field looked impressive, knocking off both Miami (OH)'s Caroline Stevens 6-0,6-0, and Kansas's Monica Sekulov 6-2,4-6,6-2 to advance to play for first place tomorrow in flight 3 singles. Another freshmen had an impressive outing in flight 4 singles. Ann Poosuthasee advanced to the first place match by defeated Miami Brooke Nelson of Miami (OH) 6-2,6-2, and then beating Susie Miller of Ball State 7-5,6-3. The other member of the Hoosier team in flight 4, Jennifer Hsia, lost her opening match to Lisa Mallaiah of Kansas 6-3,6-4, before coming back with a victory over Megan Berman of Miami (OH) 6-2,6-1. Hoosier senior Kelly Fitzgerald won both of her matches in flight 5 singles, knocking off Miami (OH)'s Natalie Adams 6-0,6-3, then doing the same to Ball State's Libby Gerding 6-4,6-3 to advance to the first place match tomorrow .
The Hoosiers continue play tomorrow with doubles action beginning at 9:00 a.m. There will be two rounds of doubles tomorrow, and the concluding round of singles competition. The doubles will take place in the morning and the singles will take place beginning at approximately 12:30. The tournament will resume at the Indiana University Outdoor Courts, but in the case of rain, will move inside to the Indiana University Tennis Center.
