September 26, 1999 HOOSIERS PICK UP FOUR FLIGHTS AT INDIANA FALL INVITATIONAL Bloomington, Ind.--The women's tennis team finished the Indiana Fall Invitational today by taking four out of the eight singles flights.
In Flight 1, senior Jessica Anderson captured first place after bouncing back from a set down to defeat Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's Melina Stanoycheva 4-6,7-5,6-4. Kelly Blanch won Flight 3 after defeating Ball State's Julie Beekman 6-1,6-2. In Flight 5, Jennifer Hsia rallied to get past Kendra Becker of Western Michigan 1-6,6-4,6-3 to win the flight. In the Flight 8 Round Robin draw, freshman Karie Schlukebir finished off her undefeated weekend by beating Notre Dame's Michelle Hamilton 8-0.
Senior Becky Wallihan took 3rd place in Flight 7 after defeating Miami (OH)'s Gwen Sikora 6-2,6-0.
In other Hoosier action, freshman Jessica Levin lost in the 1st place match to Kansas' Julia Sidorova 7-5,6-3 in Flight 4. In Flight 2, senior Zahra Ahamed defaulted after dropping the first set 6-1 to Kansas' Cheryl Mallaiah.
Head Coach Lin Loring said, "It was a good start to the year. If we can keep up this performance we will be in good shape for the dual match season in January."
The Hoosiers are now off until they host their second tournament of the
fall, The Hoosier Classic Invitational from October 15-17.
