Columbus, Ohio- The women's tennis team, coming off a strong performance two weeks ago, started the Ohio State Invitational slowly today. Playing in a 16 team tournament, the women are competing in seven singles flights and four doubles flights. The women competed in singles action today and won six of their twelve matches, but only four of nine first round matches.
The four women winning their first round matches were junior Jessica Anderson, sophomore Kelly Blanch, sophomore Jennifer Hsia and senior Kelly Fitzgerald. Playing in the second flight Anderson defeated Illinois-Chicago's Jackie Farr 6-2,6-2. Blanch, playing in the third flight, knocked off Maia Binder of West Virginia 6-4,6-2. In the seventh flight, Hsia defeated West Virginia's Radhi Mukkamala 6-3,6-1 and Kelly Fitzgerald defeated Bowling Green's Erika Mix 6-1,6-3. Junior Zahra Ahamed, playing in the first flight, lost both of her matches today. First losing to Miami (OH)'s Natalie Soetrisno 6-3,7-6, then losing to Amastasia Pozdniakova of Penn 6-4,6-3. In the fourth flight, freshmen Amanda Field lost to Iowa's Erica Johnson 3-6,6-4,7-6(5). Freshmen Karie Schlukebir, playing in the fifth flight, lost to Notre Dame's Sarah Scaringe 4-6,7 6,6-1. In the sixth flight, sophomore Ana Ceretto lost her first match to Georgia Tech's Autumn Richards 6-2,6-3, then went on to defeat Lauren Kloner of Akron 6-0,6-0. Freshmen Ann Poosuthasee did the same in the sixth flight, first losing to Kansas' Lisa Mallaiah 6-0,6-2, before defeating Georgia Tech's Tamarra Jenkin 6-2,6-1.
The Hoosiers continue play tomorrow with both singles and doubles action.
There will be two rounds of doubles tomorrow and the semi-final round in
each singles flight.
