Columbus, OH--- The women's tennis team completed day two of the Ohio State Invitational today in strong fashion. Playing in the 16 team tournament, the women are competing in seven singles flights and four doubles flights. The women competed in both singles and doubles action today, finishing the day with just three losses.
The Hoosiers rebounded from a slow start in day one to finish day two strong in singles. In flight one, junior Zahra Ahamed rebounded from two losses yesterday, to defeat Marquette's Laura Garcia 6-4,4-6,7-5. In the second flight, junior Jessica Anderson lost her first match of the year to Kelly Zalinsky of Notre Dame 7-5,6-1. She will play for 3rd place tomorrow against Syei Parker of Georgia Tech. In flight three, sophomore Kelly Blanch defeated Brooke Chiller of Kansas 6-3,6-4. Blanch will play Marquette's Sara Fernandez tomorrow for 5th place. In flight four, freshmen Amanda Field bounced back from a first round loss to win two straight matches. First, she defeated Ohio State's Kaori Kanepi 6-2,6-4, then she went to beat Manuela Todorova of Eastern Michigan 6-0,6-0. Field will play Maryland's Courtney Perkins for 9th place tomorrow. In the fifth flight, freshmen Karie Schlukebir also bounced back from a first round loss to defeat Bowling Green's Tracy Howitt 6-2,6-3, then defeating Eastern Michigan's Agieszka Tokarczuk 6-0,6-1. Schlukebir will play in tomorrow's 9th place game against West Virginia's Amy Workman. In the sixth flight, freshmen Ann Poosuthasee and sophomore Ana Ceretto advanced to play each other in tomorrow's 9th place game. Poosuthasee defeated Bowling Green's Devon Bissinger 6-0,6-1. Ceretto advanced by defeating Eatern Michigan's Christy Helsinger 6-0,6-0. In the seventh flight, senior Kelly Fitzgerald lost to Penn's Louani Bascara 6-0,6-2. Fitzgerald will play for 3rd place tomorrow against Miami (OH)'s Kelly Loeffler.
The Hoosiers started doubles action today with the first two rounds. In flight one, Ahamed and Blanch won both matches they played. First, they knocked off Sara Jackson and Emina Curic of Illinois-Chicago 8-2, then they went on to defeat Natalia Soestrino and Caroline Stevens of Miami (OH) 8-5. In flight two, Fitzgerald and Schlukebir lost their first match to Georgia Tech's Laura Ozolins and Tamarra Jenkin 8 6, before coming back to beat Arianna Rojas and Miren Sorondo of Akron 8-2. In flight three, both of Indiana's teams advanced to semifinal action. The team of Anderson and Field, first defeated Penn's Amastasia Pozniakova and Louani Bascara 8-5, and then knocked off West Virginia's Maia Binder and Katherine Agustsson. The other team in flight three, Ceretto and Hsia, first defeated Eastern Michigan's Agnieszka Niemceyk and Manuela Todorova 8-1, then defeated Maryland's Emina Curic and Courtney Perkins 8-6.
The Hoosiers will conclude play tomorrow with both singles and doubles action. The Hoosiers will compete in the final round of singles action and the final two rounds of doubles action.
