Hoosiers Capture Doubles Title At Invitational
October 11, 1998 Hoosiers Capture Doubles Title At Invitational
Columbus, OH--- After a rocky first day the women's tennis team strung together two straight solid days to end the Ohio State Invitational. Playing in the 16 team tournament, the Hoosiers captured a doubles title and played strong in the rest of today's matches. Both the singles and doubles portion of action today was cut short, due to time constraints.
In singles action, all of the Hoosiers main draw matches were canceled. Two matches were added as Additional Consolation Matches, however. Sophomore Jennifer Hsia defeated Akron's Miren Sorondo 8-5. Freshman Ann Poosuthasee defeated Ohio State's Claudia Castro 6-3,6-4.
Doubles play produced the Hoosiers only title, when junior Jessica Anderson and freshman Amanda Field won the third flight. On the way to the title, Anderson and Field defeated Megan Kearney and Erica Johnson of Iowa 9-8, then they defeated Mason Miller and Autumn Richards of Georgia Tech 8-5. The other team in flight three, sophomore Ana Ceretto and Hsia lost to Miller and Richards 8-5. In flight one, junior Zahra Ahamed and sophomore Kelly Blanch advanced to the finals with a win over Ridley and Julia Feldman of Penn 8-4, before losing to Eastern Michigan's Jean Kansuthi and Simone Duhme 8-3. In flight two, senior Kelly Fitzgerald and freshman Karie Schlukebir lost their only match to Julia Sidorova and Brooke Chiller of Kansas 9-7. In flight four, Poosuthasee and Ohio State's Monica Koplas defeated Bowling Green's Erika Mix and Tiffany LaSusa 8-5.
The Hoosier women are now off for a couple of weeks until the Georgia Tech Invitational from October 23 to the October 25. For additional information about the team or for interview requests, feel free to contact Alex Simon at 812.855.9399.
