Bloomington, Ind. The Indiana womens tennis team travels to Kalamazoo, Mich. for the ITA Midwest Championships beginning Thursday, Oct. 23 and going through Tuesday, Oct. 28.
Indiana will be represented in the singles main draw by seniors Martina Grimm, Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran, junior Dora Vastag, sophomore Sarah Batty and freshman Laura McGaffigan. Freshmen Cecile Perton and Kara Zeder, a 9-16 seed, will also be participating in the singles qualifying.
Head coach Lin Loring was pleased to find out that six Hoosiers had been selected in the main draw.
There are 36 teams in our region, and the singles main draw is only 64 players, Loring said. The fact that Indiana got six players in the main draw says that the regional committee recognizes what a successful summer and early fall our players have had. We couldnt be happier.
In doubles competition, four Hoosier pair are in the main bracket. The duos of Schlukebir and Tran, Grimm and Batty, Vastag and McGaffigan, and Perton and Zeder will represent Indiana in the main doubles draw. Schlukebir and Tran are the second seed, Grimm and Batty are a 5-8 seed and Vastag and McGaffigan are a 9-16 seed.
Singles qualifying begins at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23 and continues on Friday, Oct. 24. Main draw singles action begins on Saturday, Oct. 25. Doubles action gets underway on Friday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m.
The singles champion, singles finalist and champion doubles team from each region will earn an automatic berth into the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships November 6-9 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
