BLOOMINGTON, Ind-- Indiana womens tennis players Dora Vastag and Laura McGaffigan advanced to the round of 16 in the main doubles draw on Friday at the ITA Midwest Regionals in Minneapolis, Minn. The tandem first got past Kristin Messmer and Sonia Ruzimovsky of Ohio State, 8-2, and then outlasted Carrie Jeanmaire and Reedhina Parekh of Western Michigan, 8-5.
This is the first time Laura and Dora have player together this year, said head coach Lin Loring. Making the final 16 is outstanding. Hopefully theyll continue to play well.
While the duo was succeeding at the ITA Regionals, the rest of the Hoosiers competed at the IU Fall Invite back in Bloomington. In flight one of the singles bracket, freshman Brianna Williams was the lone Hoosier to advance as she knocked out Jennifer Pollack of Ball State, 6-2, 6-1. Seniors Kara Zeder and Dominika Walterova lost their respective matches in the first round as Zeder lost a close match to Kristin Clary of Xavier, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10) and Walterova fell to Emily Tuchscherer of Xavier. Also in flight one, freshman Amanda El-Tobgy was defeated by Pryanka Parekh of Western Michigan, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles action, El-Tobgy and Zeder are still alive in the winners bracket after day one after defeating Alicia Potts/Annie Diedalis of Xavier, 8-2 and Mae Bernosky/ Mead of Western Michigan, 8-6. The duo will face Lauren Clary and Stephanie Bauer of Xavier tomorrow morning.
