October 22, 1999 HOOSIERS FINISH DAY ONE OF THE GEORGIA TECH INVITATIONAL
Atlanta, GA - The women's tennis completed day one of the Georgia Tech Invitational today. Competing against players from Baylor, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Mississippi State, Rice, Southern Alabama and Wisconsin, the Hoosiers played two rounds of doubles and a round of single.
In Flight A doubles, Jessica Anderson and Kelly Blanch lost a close opening round match to Southern Alabama's Martina Ondrejkova and Iva Puflerova 9-8 (4). They bounced back to defeat Baylor's Karin Anderson and Frdia Borjesson 8-4. In Flight B, Zahra Ahamed and Karie Schlukebir also lost their opening match to Georgia Tech's Jaime Wong and Mysti Morris 8-6, before defeating Wisconsin's Kalie Dougherty and Shana McElroy 8-5. In Flight C, Amanda Field and J.J. Levin won their opening round match against Rice's Natalie Briaud and Kylie Wallis 8-5. They then lost to Georgia Tech's Bobbi Guthrie and Tamarra Jenkin 8-6.
In Flight A singles, Anderson defeated Baylor's Vida Mulec 6-4,6-4. Blanch lost to Southern Alabama's Silvia Sosmarova 6-3,6-2.
In Flight B singles, Levin was victorious over Wisconsin's Shana McElroy 6-1,6-2. Field lost her opening round match to Clemson's Lawrence Jaynet 6-1,6-1.
In Flight C singles, Ann Poosuthasee and Jennifer Hsia each lost their opening round match. Poosuthasee lost to Jennifer Sinclair of Iowa 7-5,6-2. Hsia was defeated by Mississippi State Andrea Lord 6-0,6-0.
Head Coach Lin Loring said, "The courts were very slow and we had a hard time adjusting to them at first. Other than that we played good for the first day."
The Hoosiers will continue play at the Georgia Tech Invitational tomorrow with rounds 2 and 3 of singles and the final round of doubles.
