BLOOMINGTON, Ind-- Indiana womens tennis players Dora Vastag and Laura McGaffigan continued to play well on Saturday at the ITA Midwest Regionals in Minneapolis, Minn. In addition, the Hoosiers had a good day on the second day of competition at the IU Fall Invitational.
At the ITA Regionals, Vastag and McGaffigan fell in the doubles round of 16 to third-seeded Hillary Mintz and Megan Racette of Iowa, 8-3, ending the duos run in doubles.
However, both players made their marks in singles action. Vastag advanced to the round of 16 with two victories and will play on Sunday at 1 p.m. Vastag opened singles play with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Irish Jaklin of Illinois-Chicago. She followed that with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Notre Dames Katrina Thompson to advance to the final 16.
McGaffigan also faired well with a win in her first round match over Lindsay Bryan of Ohio State, 6-3, 6-0. However, the Davenport, Iowa, native fell in the second round to Katrina Thompson of Notre Dame, 6-2, 6-2.
I think Laura and Dora have played really well in Minneapolis, said head coach Lin Loring. Doras opponent in the round of 16 is tough, but she is capable of winning.
As as far as the IU Fall Invitational is concerned, I dont think we have played as well as we did two weeks ago, but I think this has still been a good learning experience for out girls.
While the two were succeeding at the ITA Regionals, the rest of the Hoosiers competed at the IU Fall Invite back in Bloomington. The day began with the doubles flight as Toledos Myriam Cueva and Eunice Paravicini claimed the doubles crown with three wins, including an 8-4 win over Xaviers Lauren Clary and Stephanie Bauer in the final match. IUs tandem of Kara Zeder and Amanda El-Togby finished fourth to lead the Hoosiers. Indianas team of Dominika Walterova and Brianna Williams also faired well, winning both its matches on the day to finish in fifth-place.
In flight one of the singles bracket, freshman Brianna Williams was the lone Hoosier to advance in the winners bracket in singles flight No. 1, as she knocked out Western Michigans Maelynn Bernosky, 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. Zeder and Walterova both advanced in the loser bracket of flight one. Zeder took a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Viviana Rivero of Toledo, while Walterova defeated Jenny Batty of Ball State, 6-4, 6-4. The two Hoosiers will meet on Sunday. El-Tobgy was the only IU player to fall, as she lost her match to Paravicini, 6-2, 6-3.
