East Lansing, Mich. - Indiana's Martina Grimm, Dominika Walterova and Sophie Rychlik were in action in the qualifying singles round at the 2002 ITA/Omni Hotels Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Michigan State on Thursday.
Grimm had the best showing of the group, claiming a pair of wins over Michigan's Joanne Musgrove and Illinois' Brianna Knue. She handed Musgrove a 6-1, 6-2 defeat, then came back to edge Knue, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Her next action will come against Michigan State's Shelley Brady tomorrow.
As for Walterova and Rychlik, both suffered first round defeats. Walterova came out on the short end of a 6-1, 6-2 decision with Purdue's Shawna Zuccarini, while Rychlik suffered through a 6-0, 6-2 defeat at the hands of Ball State's Leisa Brooks.
Both Walterova and Rychlik were moved to the consolation half of the bracket, where Walterova defeated Iowa's Gloria Okino by default and Rychlik was bumped from the tournament after a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Ohio State's Emily DeCamilla.
