    Surprising Doubles Shine

East Lansing, Mich. - It comes as no surprise that the Indiana women's tennis team is represented in the quarterfinal round of the ITA/Omni Hotels Midwest Regional Doubles Championships.

What does come as a surprise, however, is that not one, but two Hoosier doubles tandems are still left standing in the round of eight.

The tournament's top seed, Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran advanced with an 8-6 win over DePaul's Szilvia Kelemen and Marina Parashkevova. It was the performance of IU's Martina Grimm and Sarah Batty that stood out though. The duo handed Northwestern's Jamie Peisel and Ruth Barnes an 8-4 defeat.

Grimm and Batty will face Illinois' Jennifer McGaffigan and Michelle Webb on Sunday.

Schlukebir and Tran square off against Western Michigan's Frederika Girsang and Melanie Peters tomorrow.

Schlukebir, Tran, Grimm and Batty all saw singles action as well, with all four being bumped from the main draw by the second round.

Schlukebir edged Wisconsin's Lindsay Martin in the first round, 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 before falling to Eastern Michigan's Rebecca Hawkins, 6-2, 6-4.

Tran won her opening-round match in straight sets, downing Girsang, 7-5, 6-2 before falling to Peisel, 6-3, 6-1 in the second round.

As for Grimm, she qualified for the main draw after getting through the qualifying draw, but suffered an opening round loss to Iowa's Cassie Haas, 7-5, 6-1.

Batty's 6-4, 6-1 loss to Michigan's Michelle DaCosta in the first round dashed her hopes of advancing in the main draw as a true freshman.
