    KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Sophomores Alba Berdala and Sigrid Fischer and freshman Lindsey Stuckey all came away with wins on the first day of the Western Michigan Super Challenge in Kalamazoo, Mich.

    "I thought we improved on a lot of things we worked on the last two weeks in practice," head coach Lin Loring said. "We still have a ways to go, but I am pleased about our progress heading into Saturday."

    Berdala defeated Virginia Tech's Inga Beerman, 6-1, 6-3. Fischer came away with a win against Kim Roberts of Wisconsin, 6-4, 6-0. Stuckey continued her winning ways with a 6-3, 6-3, victory over Mary Kate James of Virginia Tech.

    In doubles action, the duo of Berdala and Stuckey won two matches on the day. They began the day with an 8-3 victory over Northwestern's Jennifer Taylor and Wisconsin's Katya Mirnova. Berdala and Stuckey also won 8-6 over Erin Jobe and Chelsea Nusslock of Wisconsin.

    Also in doubles, the team of senior Laura McGaffigan and junior Brianna Williams earned an 8-3 victory over Lakaan Wagley and Kerryn Potgieter of Texas Tech.

    The Hoosiers continue action at the Challenge through Sunday, Nov. 5.
