November 6, 1998 Good Start For The Hoosiers At The Hoosier Fall Invitational
Bloomington, Ind.-The Hoosiers began the Hoosier Fall Invitational today in Bloomington, Indiana, with action in both singles and doubles. The tournament consists of three singles flights and two doubles flights, and consists of players from Ohio State, Western Michigan and Akron. The Hoosiers playing without junior Jessica Anderson and freshman Amanda Field, both playing at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, had a good first day in singles and doubles.
In the singles round robin flight A, the Hoosier junior Zahra Ahamed and sophomore Kelly Blanch won both of their matches, while sophomore Ana Ceretto and freshman Karie Schlukebir split both of thiers. Ahamed defeated Claudia Castro of Ohio State 6-3,6-1, then defeated Western Michigan's Cyra Malik 6-1,6-3. Blanch knocked off Arianna Rojas of Akron 6-2,6-4, before defeating Castro 6-4,7-5. Schlukebir defeated Malik 6-2,6-4, before losing to Ohio State's Monica Rincon 6-4,6-3. Ceretto lost to Rincon 7-6(3),6-2, before defeating Rojas 6-0,6-1. In Flight B, sophomore Jennifer Hsia and freshman Ann Poosuthasee split their first two matches. Hsia lost to Akron's Diana Demetrescu 6-0,6-7(7),6-3, before knocking off Akron's Miren Sorondo 3-6,6-2,7-5. Poosuthasee also lost her opening round match, as she was defeated by Ohio State's Kadri Kanepi 1-6,7-6(6),6-2. She then came back to win her second match against Demestrescu 7-5,6-2. In flight C, Kelly Fitzgerald won her only match of the day by knocking off Akron's Donna Peters.
In doubles action, the Hooisers did not fare as well. In flight 1, Blanch and Schlukebir had the only Hooisers win, as they defeated Akron's Donna Peters and Becky Schrager 8-1. In other doubles action in flight 1, Ceretto and Hsia lost to Western Michigan's Diana Demetrescu and Hillary Schafer 8-2. Ahamed and Fitzgerald lost to Claudia Castro and Monica Rincon of Ohio State 9-8. In flight 2, Poosuthasee and Akron's Lauren Kloner lost to Cyra Malik and Nikki Thompson 9-8.
The Hoosiers will continue the Hoosier Fall Invitational tomorrow with two rounds of singles acion. The third round of the A and C round robin flights will begin at 10 A.M., followed by the third round of flight B round robin flight will start at 11:30. Tomorrow's action will continue indoors from the Indiana University Tennis Center.
