Several Hoosiers Earn Top Five Finishes At Indiana Team Classic
Jan. 20, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. The Indiana track and field team posted several women in the top five in their respective events for a solid day at the Indiana Team Classic, hosted by Indiana University on Saturday, Jan. 20. Teams also participating in the Classic included Big Ten foes Wisconsin, Purdue, Illinois and Ohio State.
Senior Stacey Clausing was second in the 400-meter dash (55.34) and third in the 200-meter dash (24.32). Senior Lorain Price also had a good day with a third-place finish in the long jump, leaping 5.78 meters, and a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, coming in at 8.64.
Also competing in the 60-meter hurdles was senior Courtney Johnson, who finished fourth in the event in 8.56.
"It's good to get some competition in against some of these other Big Ten teams in preparation for the Big Ten meet," interim head women's track and field coach Judy Wilson said. "That's what each one of these meets is for, to prepare to go to Illinois for the Big Ten meet and do the best that we can do."
For the women, Wilson praised several of the underclassmen who showed solid results, including Smoot, who ran a time of 1:34.81 in the 600 meters to come in fifth, and Lauer, who was third in the 800 meters in 2:13.90. She also noted sophomore Wendi Robinson, who notched a fourth-place finish in the mile with a time of 4:54.16.
"With half of the women's roster being freshmen, there's going to be such a learning curve for them as a group," Wilson said.
The Hoosiers return to action when they host the Gladstein Invitational, Jan. 26-27. Events begin at noon EST on both Friday and Saturday.
