Feb. 3, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's track team competed on the first day of the Indiana Relays on Friday, Feb. 2, with several athletes qualifying to continue competition in their respective events.
In all, eight Hoosier athletes qualified for the finals, which will be held Saturday, Feb. 3, in their respective events.
Leading the qualifiers was senior Lorain Price. She qualified in the long jump with a leap of 5.98 meters, which was the best overall jump and her best jump this season. Price also reached the finals of the 60-mter hurdle finals with a time of 8.64.
The Hoosiers saw two qualify for the finals in the shot put, sophomore Tiffany Howard (13.79 meters) and freshman Faith Sherrill (12.57 meters). Freshman Kristen Ness earned a spot in the weight throw final with a toss of 15.88 meters.
"Everything went smoothly tonight, we had great competition," interim head men's and women's track and field coach Judy Wilson said. "Tomorrow is going to be an even bigger day technically for us."
In addition to the events listed above, other events also being held include the 4x400 meter relay and the pole vault invitational. Freshman Vera Neuenswander leads Indiana in the pole vault. Clausing will compete in the 200-meter invitational, while sophomore Wendi Robinson will race in the 3,000 meter invitational.
"Stacey is getting another step closer to preparing for Big Ten's," Wilson said. "She's really looking forward to a solid 200 meters tomorrow, as well as a good 4x400 meters. With Caitlin (Lauer) and Molly (Beckwith) competing in 4x400 tomorrow as their only race, we are hoping to do well. We have a lot of depth in that event this year, and it has shown in our times."
Action gets underway at noon EST on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Gladstein Fieldhouse.
