    Perry Leaps To Third-Place Finish in Long Jump; Three Hoosiers Advance at Big Tens

    MADISON, Wis.--IU long jumper Candace Perry took home a third-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.95m (19-06.25), which tied her personal best in the first day of competition at the 2006 Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships in Madison. The IU women sit in ninth place with 10 points. A total of three Hoosiers advanced to the finals in their respective events, including Stacey Clausing (400m), Michele Huber (400m) and Kelly Siefker (Mile).

    Clausing ran a 56.33, while Huber finished in 57.34 in the 400m trials to advance to the finals, set for tomorrow. Also in the 400m, Audrey Smoot just missed the cut, turning in a personal best time of 57.53. In the mile trials, Siefker clocked in a 4:57.71 and will compete in the finals on Sunday.

    Along with Perry's performance in the long jump, Lorian Price got IU on the board with a seventh-place finish with a mark of 5.77m (18-11.25).

    After five long and grueling events in the pentathlon, IU twins Courtney and Britney Freiberger captured 14th and 15th-place finishes, respectively. The Freibergers were solid all-around, as they both turned in personal bests in half of their events. Courtney's best finish on the afternoon was in the 800, as she finished third overall with a time of 2:20.67. Britney's best effort was in the 800m as well, finishing 10th overall in 2:29.33.

    In addition, Jessica Gall capped off the first day of competition with an eighth-place finish in the 3,000m. The West Lafayette, Ind., native crossed the finish line at 9:46.74.

    The final day of the Big Ten Championships is tomorrow, Feb. 26, with the first event, the women's weight throw set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
